The power of the Greek tech diaspora

What if I told you that Greece’s most valuable secret is not found within its own borders, but scattered around the world? What if I said that the country’s biggest competitive advantage is not its beautiful sunny islands, or even its enormous shipping fleet, but the thousands of Greek scientists, engineers, technologists and entrepreneurs that make up our global Greek diaspora?

There are 10,000s of Greek scientists and academics spread across universities, labs and research centers globally. These include some of the world’s foremost experts in artificial intelligence, robotics, network theory, biotechnology, cryptography, semiconductor fabrication, aeronautics, energy systems and materials science. Universities like MIT (in the USA), ETH Zurich (in Switzerland), Imperial College London (in the UK), University of Amsterdam (in the Netherlands) and DTU (in Denmark) are key hubs for such talent.

There are also 1,000s of Greek founders and entrepreneurs out there, including behind some of the most exciting tech companies in the world today. Runway (the ultimate AI video generation product), Nothing (the design-led smartphone company taking on Apple), REEKON Tools (the rebel taking on the anachronistic construction tools industry with phygital alternatives), Axelar (the leading interoperability layer in the blockchain space), TileDB (a data platform pioneering technology for new scientific discoveries) and Wondercraft (the all-in-one AI studio for content creation) are just few of many such examples.

And with 100+ top investors of Greek origin in the global VC space today, we are also becoming an admirable force in venture. This list includes legends like Niko Bonatsos (formerly with General Catalyst), Konstantine Buhler (Sequoia) and Nikitas Koutoupes (Insight Partners). And it welcomes many promising newcomers, such as Alex Evans (Bain Capital Crypto), Anthony Danon (Rerail) and Dora Zikouli (QuantumLight Capital).

The large Greek tech diaspora clearly plays an outsized role in shaping innovation globally. And yet, it has been severely under-appreciated and under-leveraged since its very beginning. Greeks admire our diaspora, but from a distance. We love to celebrate individual accomplishments (such as large exits and scientific breakthroughs) abroad and play up their Greek origin, but we have done very little to mobilize their collective power. Prof. Petros Koumoutsakos, one of the greatest scientists of Greek descent, has put it best: we need to build strong bridges beyond borders, not only between the diaspora and our homeland, but also among diaspora Greeks themselves.

If we can connect the best elements of this community across borders, then we can unlock enormous additional value. Bringing together researchers in Zurich with serial founders in San Francisco, or engineers in London with investors in New York, and linking them all back to Athens or Thessaloniki, creates a very powerful circle of innovation. These bridges are about more than just nostalgia or shared culture; they are about creating network effects of trust, capital, and knowledge that multiply opportunities for everyone involved.

Today, there are many Greek-powered initiatives at the intersection of science and tech around the world: Endeavor Greece, GreekTech, Hellenic Innovation Network, Hellenic Institute of Advanced Studies and the Hellenic American Meeting of Early-Career Researchers are just some of these very important nodes. But we need more people partaking in them and a greater number of these initiatives finding ways to work together. Awareness and collaboration are necessary to deepen the strength of these links.

The Greek tech diaspora is not a separate entity; rather, it is a global living organism that should be considered an extension of the country’s soul. If harnessed with the right intent, it could become the greatest strategic asset for Hellenism in the 21st century. The only question that remains is: what are we still waiting for?

📊🇬🇷 The State of the Greek economy (Q3 2025)

Welcome to the quarterly update on the macro picture of Greece.

This is meant to be a comprehensive summary of the country’s economic reality, a combination of the latest and greatest.

Today, we have 33 juicy charts for your delightful consumption.

Let’s jump straight in!

1. The Greek economy keeps growing

Greece’s economy is expected to grow by about ~2% in 2025 and 2026.

In Q2 2025, Greece maintains the 8th fastest GDP growth rate quarter-on-quarter in the EU, well above average.

But the growth percentage is not as interesting as Greece’s GDP decomposition.

A few interesting observations:

• Greece’s GDP is still below pre-crisis levels, but on a path to surpass it by ~2030, if it continues with an average growth rate around its current ~2%.

• Consumption has been consistently the biggest component of Greek GDP and has been almost unchanged in 20 years. Greeks continue consuming like crazy, often even beyond their means (or, by virtue of making more than they actually declare).

• The Greek state has actually become more efficient. Consumption of General Government is below pre-crisis levels and has only marginally increased over the past 10 years.

• Investment flows are going up, but still below pre-crisis levels. Gross capital formation has yet to reach its former peak, but has been growing steadily.

• Exports have increased. That’s really great.

• Imports are ballooning. That’s pretty bad.

2. Unemployment is falling steadily

Unemployment in Greece has been falling continuously over the past few years, reaching 8.1% in 2025, down from almost 30% in the 2014-15 era.

This is one of the most consistently positive themes in Greece’s macro picture.

Some critics argue that the change is not real, often pointing to the difference between the Labour Force Survey from ELSTAT and the employment measure from National Accounts (NA), the latter being slightly higher. But that’s not true.

The data is clear and unambiguous:

• Total employment has been increasing continuously across both the ELSTAT and the NA unemployment measure. In fact, total employment in Greece according to the NA reading is 5% above its pre-crisis peak, even after we account for demographics (i.e. decline in the working-age population).

• The number of unemployed Greeks has been declining rapidly and consistently, by ~11.6% annually over the last 4 years.

• Vulnerable groups (age and gender) have seen considerable employment improvements (female unemployment from 20.7% in 2020 down to 10.6% in 2025, youth unemployment from 40.5% in 2020 down to 19% in 2025).

• Labour market slack (all persons who have an unmet need for employment, including unemployed people) in Greece saw the strongest decrease among EU countries, dropping from a top of 34.3% in 2013 to 14.4% in 2024, which is now inches above the EU average.

3. Inflation finally starting to ease

Inflation is Greece (primarily in the food category) had stayed relatively high in the post-COVID era, lingering between 2% and 4% for almost three years.

Thankfully, Q3 2025 has shown early signs of easing in domestic inflationary pressures, with inflation dropping to 1.8% in September from 3.1% just a month earlier.

Greece had one of the lowest annual inflation rates across the entire EU in September 2025.

This is a welcome change. However, given the already high level of prices today in Greece, the trend will have to continue for at least one more quarter in order to be felt on a local household level.

4. Debt reduction is a true success story

Greece’s debt ratio is finally expected to fall below pre-crisis levels this year.

In fact, if Greece’s debt-to-GDP ratio reduction continues on the current trajectory, it will fall below both that of Italy and the US before 2030.

Just a few days ago, Greece announced another large reduction of its debt profile. In December, the Public Debt Management Agency (PDMA) will proceed with the early repayment of €5.29 billion from loans of the first Greek bailout, immediately reducing the country’s debt by 2.2% of GDP and saving 150 million euros in interest over a 12-year period.

5. Trade (im)balance still a fundamental problem

Greek imports continue to hover significantly higher than Greek exports in 2025, which is in line with historical trends.

While the latest reading from August recorded a 18.8% decrease in the trade deficit, the lingering trade (im)balance presents a fundamental problem for the country.

Unfortunately, the first quarter of 2025 has found Greece with a widening current account deficit yet again, continuing on its decade-long historical trend.

The gap between exports and imports has been widening.

If only look at the share of services exported outside of EU by large enterprises, a key metric of exportability, we see that Greece had the lowest percentage (3.3%) across the entire European Union.

6. Stock market leading the way

The Athens Stock Exchange (ATHEX) has returned an impressive ~40% year to date, surpassing all other European peers.

This is on track with the 3 year and 5 year annualized performance of Greece, which has consistently achieved the highest returns in Europe.

More impressively, ATHEX has achieved an unprecedented 11 straight months of gains (i.e. no index loses), which is the highest consecutive streak in its history.

There are two interesting developments to note here:

• Euronext, the largest stock exchange group in Europe, has made a public offer to acquire 67% of ATHEX’s management group. This is an ongoing process set to close in November.

• FTSE Russell has upgraded the Greek capital market from “Advanced Emerging Market” status to the “Developed Market” category.

6. Poverty reduction is real, but uneven

Let’s start by looking at the in-work poverty rate.

This indicator measures the share of persons who are employed and have an equivalised disposable income below the risk-of-poverty threshold.

The in-work poverty rate has been falling continuously in the past decade, reaching the lowest percentage for the totality of Greek workers in 2024. The trend also holds true for temporary and part-time workers, but with more ups and downs.

At the same time, the broader at-risk-of-poverty trends have showed a considerable slow-down in improvement, and in some cases even minor reversals.

While social conditions in Greece have clearly improved since 10 years ago, there is still tremendous strain that is unevenly split across poor and lower income families.

7. Productivity remains exceptionally low

Greece’s labour productivity per hour worked is pretty abysmal.

Borrowing from the latest European Commission country report for Greece:

“Based on 2024 data, Greek per capita GDP in purchasing power standards is the second lowest in the EU, at only 70% of the EU average. Greece’s labour productivity per hour worked was the lowest within the EU, reaching only 56.2% of the EU average in 2023.”

Since 2009, the productivity of the Greek economy has fallen by -16%. Almost all sectors have recorded productivity losses.

The largest losses (1/3 of the total) were recorded by the “Accommodation and Food Services” (AFS) sector (-5.2%). If we included real-estate in the equation, the total figure would have been even more startling.

Interestingly, the deteriorating level of Greek productivity is also linked with the high cost of living faced by most Greeks today.

Greece’s unit labour cost competitiveness improved marginally in Q2 but remains exceptionally low, downward-spiraling and significantly lower than EU average.

Is there a silver lining? Perhaps, if we look at real GDP produced per Greek worker, which is a key measure of labour productivity.

According to a study produced by Eurobank’s research economist Stelios Gogos, we have one very negative and one very positive result.

• A very negative result:

  • “Labor productivity and demographic trends are thorns in the Greek economy. Cumulatively, they explain over 80% of the deviation of real GDP in 2024 compared to the 2008 peak. Therefore, to the question of why real GDP in Greece is 15.1% lower than the 2008 peak (16.4% based on the difference in natural logs), the answer given is that the product produced by the average employee in Greece is considerably smaller compared to pre-crisis debt levels (e.g. due to a decrease in natural capital per employee and the high long-term unemployment of previous years), while the population has also shrunk, reducing the resources available to the labor force and employment pools.”

• A very positive result:

  • “During the period of the Greek economic recovery (2017-2024), the average annual change in real GDP was 1.8%. The increase in the employment rate, i.e. the decrease in the unemployment rate, explains almost entirely this result. The population continued to move downward, while labor productivity in 2024 was marginally lower than 2016 levels. However, in the last two years (2023-2024), the average annual increase in real GDP (2.3%) did not come only from the strengthening of the employment rate but also from the increase in labor productivity and the participation rate of the population in the labor force.”

That last part is crucial. It means that we have started witnessing a recent yet very important reversal of fortunes in terms of labour productivity and its contribution to the overall GDP of the country.

8. Business sector keeps growing, despite international pressures

Business sector sales continue to grow, although at a smaller pace than previous years. 2025 is expected to end with €388 billion in sales revenue, which is almost 60% greater than in 2019.

The IT sector continues to dominate, led by continued domestic demand for the digital transformation of the state and industry (fueled by EU funds).

One of the most positive developments: extroversion of Greek businesses has been increasing, reaching 24% of period sales in 2025 and only inches away from the 26% EU average.

9. Investments keep coming in

Gross Fixed Capital Formation (GFCF) has increased by 6.5% y-o-y and 7.4% q-o-q in Q2 2025, reaching a 15-year high of 16.6% of GDP.

Majority of investments are still concentrated in real estate, although more productive sectors (like industry) are picking up too.

According to EY’s 2025 FDI attractiveness survey, 48% (one in two) respondents stated that their company plans to establish or expand operations in Greece over the next year. This is the second highest number recorded after last year’s 51%.

10. Energy situation pretty mixed

Since 2023, Renewable Energy Sources (RES) has been the top energy source covering electricity demand in Greece, taking over the fossil/gas category.

Crucially, Greece has been a net exporter of electric energy over the past two years, which shows the growing strength of the domestic energy capacity.

At the same time, RES curtailments (i.e. the involuntary reduction of electric generator output to maintain grid stability) have gone through the roof.

This is extremely concerning. It means that our energy grid is overly constrained and tremendously inefficient, leading to an unbelievable amount of “lost energy”, while at the same time overburdening consumers with variably high prices.

Greece desperately requires better energy storage facilities.

11. (Lack of) island infrastructure clashes with tourism boom

Greek tourism industry continues to grow in terms of arrivals and revenues generated, but it is facing important capacity constraints and has led to growing calls of addressing its most harmful effects.

Greece’s famous island archipelago is the most exposed, threatened by continuously worsening problems of overcrowded-ness, unchecked hyper-construction and an overall lack of proper public infrastructure (that is already crumbling during the overloaded summer months).

According to data from NBG, Greek islands received 11% of total arrivals across the entire global island tourism industry in 2024.

So far this year tourism revenues in the period Jan-July 2025 have reached €12.1 billion, up 12.5% ​​or €1.35 billion compared to the corresponding period in 2024, with cruise revenues recording an increase of 23.1%. (INSETE)

Greek islands (and the mainland) experience more than twice the population increase that the Spanish islands (and mainland) receive during the July-August high season period. At the same time, they receive almost half the infrastructure investment per capita.

In simple terms, Greek islands are both overburdened and underinvested.

NBG estimates that Greece will need to invest €35 billion by 2035 (€3.5 billion per year x 10 years) to get the country’s existing infrastructure in the islands on par with rising demand. This is an extra €1.5 billion per year on top of annual existing investments of €2 billion.

The biggest risk today: unclear responsibilities (Ministries vs regional councils vs. local municipalities vs. Technical Chamber) that lead to significant delays and many much needed infrastructure projects not making it past planning phases.

12. A fragmented political landscape of low trust

The centre right government of Nea Dimokratia (ND) continues to maintain a lead in national polls. This lead is now narrower than in past years (down to 25-30% from ~40% only two years earlier) and subject to growing headwinds.

The opposition is fragmented and smaller parties remain in a volatile state. There is not a single serious contender against ND to have emerged in the past 6 years of its ruling. PASOK has failed to offer a strong alternative, hovering below 15% for more than a year, and sending mixed signals. SYRIZA fizzled out to 5-7% after the departure of Alexis Tsipras (who, for unworldly reasons that only he seem to possess, has decided to make a political comeback).

A number of highly populist ultra right wing parties (e.g., Hellenic Solution, polling at 10-12%) and hyper left wing parties with a twist (e.g., Plefsi Eleftherias, polling at 8-10%) have won over disaffected voters from both sides of the ideological spectrum. The Communist Party (KKE) remains the most consistent presence (polling at 7-10%).

Public trust in political parties is strikingly low across the board, a trend which underscores the wider malaise beyond any one party’s political fortunes.

Ultimately, there are two big questions lingering in the minds of any analyst or investor concerned with Greek politics: (1) since the prospects of ND to form a majority in the next election seem very slim, who would PM Mitsotakis have to partner with to remain in power? And (2) how (if at all) will the government be able to handle growing voter discontent around the cost of living crisis and the deepening mistrust in its own governance, as well as other public institutions, such as the justice system, without rushing to early elections?

Conclusion

Greece’s macroeconomic fundamentals present a mixed yet resilient picture.

Outside the messy political realm, I still see the macro picture half full, although the velocity of growth and the pace of real reforms have both slowed down.

Compared to the rest of Europe today, as well as its former self, Greece’s troubles continue to be outweighed by the positive momentum. Let’s hope this lasts.

This Greek founder will become a household name

Modern Greek Epics #2: The story of Dimi Nikolaou, vibe era maestro extraordinaire

Dimitris (Dimi) Nikolaou was born in Greece around 30 years ago.

Most of Dimi’s childhood and adolescent life was defined by one word: basketball.

For 10 years, his dream was to get selected for the Greek national basketball team.

Spoiler alert: he actually made it!

Together with the national team, Dimi’s brief semi-professional stint in basketball saw him play for the London Greenhouse Pioneers and the Surrey Scorchers.

While we are not here to talk about the potential athletic career Dimi could have enjoyed in a not-so-distant parallel universe, basketball is key to the equation.

Why, you ask?

Because it infused Dimi with the right skills, mindset and ethos to build one of the most impressive tech startups of the decade: Wondercraft.

We are here to celebrate this journey.

Who is Dimitris (Dimi) Nikolaou?

Like many young Greek expats of his generation, Dimitris left Greece right after school to study in the UK. He did his undergrad (econ + finance) at University of Surrey and earned a masters (computer science) at Imperial.

In between his studies, he managed to play basketball for a professional team, intern for a hedge fund and even work at Zynga, the famed game studio.

After finishing with university, Dimi went on to work at Palantir for four years. Please don’t ask me (or him) exactly what he did there. Let’s just say that the work was mysterious and important, and leave it at that.

And yet, there are two important public outcomes of Dimi’s time at Palantir:

1. Dimi grinded his way through many extremely demanding roles (including as a Forward Deployed Engineer, a Palantir-bred innovation).

2. He met Youssef Rizk, also a top level FDE, who became a good friend.

The combination of the grind and this friendship are instrumental in how the story continues: both Dimi and Youssef ended up leaving Palantir. Leveraging the insane training they received at the company, they decided to build something new together.

That’s how the story of Moonshot begins.

“Wait, what is Moonshot? I thought we were talking about Wondercraft here.”

Well, like every good founder’s story, the path to greatness is never linear.

And so it took a few twists and turns for Dimi and his crew to get there.

Pivot, pivot, pivot

In basketball, pivoting is a fundamental skill that helps players maintain balance while holding the ball to pass, shoot, or dribble. But pivoting is also important (and, often, even existential) in startup life.

Dimi and Youssef started their entrepreneurial journey by building Moonshot, a platform that allowed sports fans to support their favorite athletes by funding their journey in exchange for a portion of their future earnings.

Their concept was good enough to get them into the Y Combinator Summer 2022 batch (YC S22) and receive initial funding. But like with many great ideas, product market fit (PMF) proved much more elusive.

“If you build it, they will come” only works in movies, not in real life businesses.

Dimi and Youssef understood this really well, which is why they threw out their initial idea, and after a few days of intense white boarding sessions, decided to instead pursue another angle: content creators.

Dimi has talked in detail about the pivot from Moonshot to Wondercraft, describing it as one of the hardest decisions in his life. He offers great advice for any founder facing similar dilemmas today:

Dimi’s framework for pivoting

1. Timebox your efforts. Don’t question yourself every day. Go all in until your pre-set deadline.

2. Force some shocks. Find three knowledgeable people on the outside and be fully transparent with them. Let them tell you exactly how badly (or well) you’re doing.

3. Listen to people that did this before. Friend founders at a similar stage often make the most sense.

Riding the “vibe era” wave

You probably have heard a lot about “vibe coding” during the past couple of years.

Vibe coding refers to coder using a hands-off programming style and trusting AI coding environments to “get the right vibe” as well as fix errors through iterative feedback. Tools like Lovable, Bolt and Cursor are leading the charge, helping people create entire applications or websites in minutes, with just a few prompts.

But the “vibe era” is not defined solely by coding. It is also about content creation.

This is where Wondercaft comes in: Dimi’s team aims to become the ultimate vibe creation platform for any type of content on the internet today.

While the team started initially with audio (and focusing on podcasts), it has gradually expanded its reach, most recently moving into the world of video.

Their bet: video is the language of the internet (Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, etc.), so they want to create the simplest video generation platform in the world to capture this large market of social interaction and creative expression.

There are many video generation tools out there, including new AI based ones. What distinguishes Wondercraft from the rest is that they are religious about creating the simplest possible flow for creation, enabling both rookies and professionals alike.

Relentless execution

Vibes are great. But only paired with grit do they deliver a really great business.

From making it to the first basketball team in his high school, to becoming its captain, and ten years later playing for the youth national basketball team, all the way to excelling at Imperial and lasting four years at Palantir (no easy feat), Dimi is no stranger to tenacious work.

It is exactly this spirit of relentless execution that he has carried into Wondercraft and has helped the company become already so successful (in terms of ARR) and popular (among creators).

Dimi’s work ethic is astonishing, and all the more impressive when coupled with his always-smiling attitude. Hard work means nothing without enjoying the ride.

But the playbooks the team have executed on are also nothing sort of ingenious.

Wondercraft is shipping like crazy, raising the bar with each new product. At the same time, they have been running some of the most clever (guerrilla) marketing tactics in European tech, building brand awareness for their key audience of creators while hiring some of the top engineers across Europe along the way.

Why I love Dimi’s story

Dimi’s journey with Wondercraft is a good reminder that when you’ve done the work upfront, have built a strong mental foundation and also are genuinely open to the zig-zags of life, great things will happen to you.

Wondercraft has everything going for it to become a unicorn level European company. Dimi, together with Youssef, have built a great team around them that keeps pushing the envelop every single day. The chaotic elegance and structured persistence of Wondercraft is a match made in heaven.

Dimi’s unbending grit, together with his big smile, has already become a source of inspiration for many young Greek founders dreaming of making their mark with their own epic ventures.

In the beginning, there were links

Web links are not a new idea.

In fact, links are as old as the web itself. In the late 1980s, Tim Berners-Lee (“the father of the web”) was working at CERN and had a problem to solve. He needed to manage different documents across different formats located across different computer networks.

Berners-Lee’s idea was to create a system to link information together.

His concept was titled “Information Management: A Proposal” and he spent a couple of years not just designing the first specifications of what we today call “the web” but also implementing the first web browser, the first web server, the first HTTP specification (how web browsers communicate with web servers), and the first HTML specification (how web browsers know what to “draw” where).

The rest, as we say, is history.

Links and Domain names

While the first web browser came to the scene in the early 1990s, domain names (like substack.com or gov.gr) actually predated the web as a technology.

In the 1980s, we already had networks of computers which needed to communicate with one another. While these computers were perfectly happy addressing one another using numeric addresses known as Internet Protocol (IP) addresses, we humans were not so good with them.

It’s very easy for us to remember google.com yet much harder to remember 142.251.40.110 which is one of the numeric IP addresses that will connect your computer to one of Google’s. Domain names were invented to abstract away these numbers and allow us to use more memorable names.

Generic top level domains (like .com and .org) were the first ones available to commercial users. Country code domains (like .gr) were introduced a few years later, allowing countries sovereign control over their domain names.

In Greece, domains ending in .gr are administered by the Foundation of Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH). According to public statistics, the Greek domain registry currently holds more than 500,000 .gr domain names.

Diamonds vs. Domain names

Unlike diamonds, domain names are not forever. When purchasing a domain name, you don’t purchase it for life.

You buy domains for fixed periods of time: a year or multiple years, if you are willing to pay an extra cost. After this period passes, you have to renew your domain name registration and pay the registrar the appropriate annual fee. As long as you keep doing that, the domain name cannot be taken away from you.

If a domain is not renewed, it eventually returns back to the pool of available domain names. Once that happens, whoever pays that domain’s registration fee becomes the new owner of that domain name.

Entire industries have spawned around domain names. So-called drop-catchers are specialized companies that analyze 100,000s of domain names that expire every single day, searching for the most valuable ones in order to re-register them. These domain names may be valuable because they are short and memorable, have been around for a while, or have many backlinks (i.e. many sites that are linking back to their domain name).

Expired domain names and cybersecurity

At this point, you may have started putting two and two together.

If we had 100 sites linking to a domain name that expired and someone else re-registered it, they now get to keep these 100 established links. The linking sites are completely unaware that this change-of-hands happened.

Unfortunately, many of the entities re-registering these expired domains are malicious. They take advantage of the existing backlinks and expose users to all sorts of unwanted and malicious content, from affiliate abuse and low-quality ads, to a wider range of scams and phishing sites.

Greek users and Greek institutions are unfortunately not exempt from the rise in cybercrime. In 2024, the cost of cybercrime rose to more than 16 billion dollars, with the Greek Cyber Crime Unit receiving almost 90,000 calls from affected citizens in that same year. Expired domain names and bad links on websites are a prime way to expose citizens to malicious content.

Greeks stepping up

A team of three Greeks saw this global problem of bad links and decided to do something about it.

Nick Nikiforakis, Michalis Loukeris, and Spyros Ligouras launched LinkSentry, an auditing platform that continuously monitors websites to find bad links before they affect users.

The three of them reached out to me earlier this summer, right after they had launched their tool. They had analyzed my substack and showed me all the links that were once perfectly good, yet now were totally broken, expired, and in some cases, even outright malicious. I was shocked!

I got to experience first-hand the effects of link hijacking. I pride myself in providing a safe and high-quality experience to my readers, so this felt like a strong punch in the stomach.

No matter how many times one inspects the external links on a website, they can still turn malicious the next day or the next month. Continuous monitoring and automation are key, in a world where domains expire daily and remote sites get compromised every second.

Now, you might be thinking: “Okay, broken links are annoying, but are they really that big of a deal?” The answer is a resounding yes.

We live at time when the web is changing faster than ever: AI systems are producing mass new content, algorithms are choosing what we see, and bad actors are finding new and more sophisticated ways to trick us online. Every broken or expired link is not just a dead end anymore; it’s an open door for misinformation, scams, and even large-scale digital (and social) manipulation.

As artificial intelligence becomes the world’s biggest online reader (and writer), the web it learns from (and at the same time produces) becomes increasingly less trustworthy. When legitimate sources vanish or their domains fall into the wrong hands, AI tools (and the people behind them) can unknowingly spread false and even malicious information. A link that once led to a credible news report could, overnight, lead to a phishing site or an AI-generated deep-fake. In some cases, it could even re-write the past.

That’s not just inconvenient; it’s outright dangerous.

Beyond the security risks, there’s something more subtle happening: the slow erasure of our digital history. The internet was once imagined as a kind of living library. Today, old servers with critical information are shutting down, archives are disappearing and the early web is fading away link by link. When those connections break, we lose more than information. We lose context, memory, and trust.

This is why what this small team of Greeks is doing matters so much. They’re not just fixing broken links; they are quietly protecting the continuity of the web itself. In an era where so much online content is artificial or fleeting, their mission is refreshingly human: keep the record straight, preserve what’s real and make sure that when you click a link, you can still trust where it takes you.

Ain’t that the definition of a modern Greek epic?

🔮 The future of Greece

There’s something deeply idiosyncratic about Greeks that makes us love the present. We are thrilled by the immediacy of life. We thoroughly enjoy living in the now. And we are great at improvising on the spot and manoeuvring our way out of tricky situations. It’s one of our greatest strengths.

Unfortunately, it’s also one of our deepest weaknesses. While we might be great at enjoying (and surviving) the moment, we are notoriously terrible at planning beyond it. The result? A country that keeps inheriting the unintended consequences of yesterday’s short-term decisions.

Three examples illustrate this pattern vividly: how we built our largest city (Athens), how we threw everything behind a single sector of our economy (tourism), and how we are now planning for our digital future (data centers).

Athens: the city that drowned in concrete

During the first half of the 20th century, Athens faced a severe housing crisis. Two World Wars (plus a civil one), a large migratory wave of Greek refugees from Anatolia, and widespread poverty hollowed out smaller cities and villages alike.

To survive, hundreds of thousands of Greeks moved to the capital. How could the (small, then) city of Athens house so many new people?

Enter antiparochí: a clever, almost folkloric arrangement between landowners and developers. One party provided land, the other built apartments. Both walked away with something: the landowner with one or more apartments in the new building, the developer with the remaining ones. At the time, this felt like a miracle rooted in pragmatism.

But the miracle was really a mirage that came at a huge cost. Once an elegant patchwork of neoclassical houses, courtyards, and narrow streets, Athens quickly became transformed into a dense concrete jungle of multi-apartment buildings (famously known as polykatoikíes).

Tens of thousands of neoclassical and interwar buildings, many of which would now be considered national treasures, were completely erased. This was not just a loss of aesthetic value, but the obliteration of centuries-long cultural continuity.

Antiparochí produced millions of homes quickly but without coherent urban planning, green space considerations, or proper accompanying infrastructure. What was initially lauded as an ode to efficiency, gradually became the path to absolute urban suffocation.

Antiparochi produced structures that were built cheaply and quickly, many of which are now energy-inefficient and crumbling. Most polykatoikíes have minimal insulation, no earthquake retrofitting, and aging plumbing and electrical systems.

The system prioritized maximum buildable volume over livability. Developers squeezed every legal cubic meter out of plots, leaving no room in the city for parks, courtyards, or public squares.

Today, Athens:

• ranks among the least green capitals in Europe, with less than 0.96 m² of green space per resident

• has one of the worst air quality rankings (745th out of 761 cities in Europe)

• has one of the highest levels of noise pollution in Europe (and the world)

• is one of the least resilient cities against the heat, now also known as “Europe’s hottest city” (in the very literal, not fun, way)

• forces locals to spend at least 1/3 of the day in traffic if they choose not to take the city’s notoriously unpredictable, infrequent and limited public transport

The unbearable summer heat, year-long smog and ubiquitous lack of green spaces are not a coincidence: they are all the direct result of the short-term logic that guided antiparochí.

Today, we are sadly repeating the same mistakes. The New Building Regulation (“Neos Oikodomikos Kanonismos” aka NOK), devised during the beginning of our last crisis to boost the construction industry and modernize existing building infrastructure, has brought an even greater set of unintended consequences.

In theory, NOK was meant to usher in a new era of sustainable building development. In practice, it has evolved into Frankenstein’s monster: a labyrinth of exceptions and skewed incentives that favor obscenely large developments and reward disproportionately few “insiders”. This problem was exacerbated after the Greek government passed a series of amendments that also included extra building bonuses. Over-time, these completely changed the spirit of the original legislation.

NOK’s complexity has created the perfect launching pad for opportunism. Developers exploit “green” bonuses and volumetric allowances not to improve the energy quality of buildings, but to erect giant monstrosities that would make Ictinus and Callicrates crawl in their graves. What was advertised as energy-efficient modernization has in many historic neighborhoods unleashed a new wave of uncontrolled mega-construction, this time benefiting only a very small class of economic elites.

The damage from NOK is not merely visual. The new wave of demolitions erases more than physical buildings; it is killing our historic memory. Layer by layer, the small living archive of Athens (few neoclassical façades, modest interwar homes and rare instances of architectural restraint) are being replaced by anonymous, monotonous and oversized structures that absorb light and radiate heat.

In the name of “energy efficiency,” we are destroying the very fabric that once made the city resilient and humane. It is a cruel paradox: a legislation meant to upgrade the city’s quality of life may well be ensuring that, in a few decades, we are forced to rebuild again, this time from a far poorer starting point.

But beyond the architectural and environmental costs, NOK’s unconstitutional distortions are deepening social divides and straining the city’s already fragile infrastructure. The new rules allow developers to build higher and denser buildings than ever before (sometimes two or even three extra floors higher compared to the original zoning limits) under the guise of “energy upgrades.”

This has created an uneven playing field: older homeowners are penalized for following the law, while new projects tower above them, blocking light, airflow, and access to green spaces. At the same time, Athens’s water, sewage, electricity and road networks (systems already operating near or at capacity) are being forced to support far greater demand than what they were designed for. The city grows vertically, but its foundations, both physical and social, remain neglected.

With the lingering housing crisis in Athens, there is no doubt that construction needs to continue. And yes, that does mean more buildings and higher vertical expansion. But it also means lateral growth in areas outside the city center, while establishing a much better public transportation system (like every other proper European metropolis) to allow people to transit in and out for work. Some dense neighborhoods are at capacity and can barely hold new entries. Others hold cultural and architectural gems that need to be protected.

More importantly, what Athens needs most today is a proper town layout and urban planning strategy that is consistent, long-term and fair for all its citizens.

Tourism: the golden goose built on shifting sand

In 2024, tourism contributed more than €30 billion directly to the Greek economy. That’s nearly 13% of the country’s GDP. If we also account for the indirect contributions, that number is closer to a third of Greek GDP. By most measures, tourism is Greece’s most important engine of economic growth.

But the engine of the Greek tourism industry runs on borrowed time. The problem is not tourism itself, but the extreme dependency this has created for us. We have built an economy that rises and falls based on how many people visit our country each year and how much they spend per night.

When the world travels, Greece prospers; when traveling is reduced, the Greek economy is in pain. The pandemic, extreme weather events (that are becoming more frequent) and new geopolitical risks have shown us how fragile our tourism-based economy truly is.

While we have perfected the art of servicing others, we have neglected the harder task of building industries of enduring added value. Sectors that could provide resilience, such as advanced manufacturing and information technology, remain underdeveloped, contributing only about 12% of GDP combined.

Nowhere is this short-term thinking more visible than along our coasts. Public beaches have been quietly fenced off by luxury resorts, beach bars, and sprawling hotel complexes. The so-called “Athens Riviera”, formerly loved as an area of family-friendly seaside neighborhoods and modest summer houses for Athenians, is now fast becoming a gated playground of private beaches, valet parking, and super luxurious condos for tourists and rich expats.

Similar scenes unfold across the Greek islands: entire stretches of Paros, Corfu, Naxos, Crete and Rhodes are being devoured by enormous developments that erase dunes, swallow coves and exhaust fragile ecosystems. Coastal zoning laws exist largely on paper, while construction permits multiply in practice.

A pretty notorious case surfaced this summer in Milos, where a hotel was found to have received a permit *and* started construction right next to a world famous Greek scenic treasure: the Sarakiniko beach. The permit should never have been issued in the first place and was only revoked after immense public outcry. This is just one case in a sea of hundred other examples of hoteliers, large development groups, foreign plutocrats, domestic oligarchs and even low level petty criminals finding ways of running wild in our coastal areas.

Over-tourism is also becoming a real issue. Each year, more than 35 million visitors descend in a country of just 10 million residents. In some islands, the ratio of tourists to locals during peak season exceeds 20 to 1. The explosion of hotels, luxury villas and short-term rentals has pushed local housing prices beyond reach, transforming once-vibrant communities into transient, seasonal outposts.

The infrastructure that supports this boom is cracking under the strain.

Water shortages in Mykonos, Paros, Santorini, Amorgos and many other islands have become routine. Old power grids are buckling under relentless air-conditioning loads. Sewage, waste, and transport systems are collapsing each August under the weight of arrivals they were never designed to handle. Hospitals overflow, roads clog and beaches vanish behind fences and plastic sunbeds. For many locals, their summer experience has completely changed from a reason to live in to a reason to leave from Greece.

Our rush to extract monetary returns out of every last ounce of beauty in our sun-kissed environment is depleting the very thing that sustains us. Greece’s coastline, its most precious natural and cultural asset, is being traded piece by piece for short-term gain, while the long-term costs accumulate annually.

Tourism will likely remain a key part of our growth strategy for decades. But it can neither remain the only one, nor can we afford leaving it unsupervised any longer.

Data centers: AI dreams hit infra nightmares

Greece is host to at least 22 data center operations and plans to welcome 18 new ones by 2030, most clustered around Attica and Thessaloniki. On paper, the idea makes perfect sense: attract investment, create more jobs and anchor Greece as a key European player in the AI race. I have personally been vocally in favor of that strategy for quite some time.

And yet, the fine print is sobering. Data centers are notoriously energy-hungry. They need vast amounts of electricity and water to cool their servers. Greece’s grid is under severe strain, with renewable energy curtailed simply because the infrastructure cannot absorb it. Water scarcity, particularly in southern Greece and the islands, raises additional alarms. Even in Athens, water reservoirs have just dropped to a one-year supply.

Other countries have already learned these lessons the hard way.

In the United States, water-stressed states like Arizona and Nevada have seen data centers consume millions of gallons of water per day, aggravating drought conditions and sparking fierce local backlash. In Virginia’s “Data Center Alley,” which hosts the world’s highest concentration of server farms, power demand has grown so extreme that network operators narrowly missed extensive state-wide blackouts and local authorities have introduced new required permits. In fact, just days ago Reuters published a story on how some U.S. utility companies are seeing data center electricity requests that exceed the total energy currently used by all of their customers combined.

The Netherlands has already imposed a moratorium on new hyperscale data centers after discovering that their electricity consumption rivaled that of entire cities. Even Ireland, once considered Europe’s data center darling, has had to pause approvals as data centers now account for more than 20% of national electricity use, threatening to derail its clean energy goals.

Greece is far less equipped than any of these countries to absorb similar shocks. Our energy grid, though improving, remains both fragile and fragmented. Renewable energy generation frequently exceeds transmission capacity, leading to the absurd situation where green energy is wasted because we lack sufficient storage or proper interconnection infrastructure.

Despite abundant sun and wind, Greece still has minimal large-scale battery storage facilities, meaning the country cannot reliably balance power loads or provide stable supply to energy-intensive and computational heavy facilities like data centers or AI gigafactories. If we add our outdated water pipelines and almost non-existent wastewater recycling to the mix, the picture becomes even more bleak.

There is no doubt that Greece should invest in technologies that will shape our future for centuries to come. But building digital castles without securing the proper physical infrastructure risks introducing significant economic, societal and environmental pressures that will come back and haunt us many times over.

Let’s keep building these cloud storage facilities. But with an actual plan.

Where does all that leave us?

The future of Greece will not be decided by how cleverly we navigate the present, but by whether we can finally look beyond it.

Our cities, our coasts, and now even our new digital foundations all bear the marks of a nation that has mastered improvisation but is neglecting preparation. Each new generation inherits the outcomes of our creativity; it is time to stop inheriting the burden of our haste too.

To change our predicament, we need to think long-term. To build Athens not for the following tourist season, but for the next century of citizen living. To protect our precious islands and coastal areas not as fleeting assets, but as enduring treasures. To pursue technological progress in the age of AI not as spectacle, but in a structured and viable way that builds lasting value for the country.

Greece will be both smaller and weaker if it continues on reaction mode. To avoid such fate and ensure a better destiny for our country, we need to augment improvisation with intention, and crisis management with a culture of preemptive planning.

At the end, the real miracle will not be our ability to survive the moment. It will be finding the reservedness to plan for the next one.

🌎 The Greek diaspora

From the vibey shores of Melbourne (Australia) to the spirited neighborhood of Astoria NYC (USA), and from the busy city of London (UK) to the funky streets of Toronto (Canada), Greece’s spirit flows far beyond the borders of the mainland and its many islands.

The large Greek diaspora plays a very powerful yet highly under-appreciated role in shaping culture, economics and politics on a global level.

When people think about the Greek diaspora, they often associate it with the past.

We all have a story of a relative or friend that left Greece years or even decades ago in search of a better life elsewhere.

But the Greek diaspora is not a relic. And while it has made history, it certainly is not history itself; rather, it is a dynamic life force actively shaping the present (and future) of global Hellenism.

It’s not the “where”, it’s the “who”

Hellenism survives not because of where it is, but because of who keeps it alive.

Whether you are a third-generation Greek-Canadian still using your yiayia’s dolmadakia recipe, a second-gen diaspora Greek who participates in your local church gatherings in Chicago, or even a recent expat working in the buzzing Berlin tech scene, your connection to Greece matters.

This is not just nostalgia. Today, a large cross-section of the diaspora (led by the youth) is looking to Greece with renewed purpose. And, increasingly, it is asking bigger and more important questions:

• What does it mean to be Greek today?

• How can we help Greece’s evolution, and not just its preservation?

• How do we build stronger bridges between homeland Greece and the diaspora that go beyond summer holidays and family visits?

There has never been a better time for Greeks all over the world to come together and try finding good answers to some of these questions.

Greek diaspora stories

The future of Greece is not just found in Athens, Thessaloniki or Crete. It’s also found in Sydney, Melbourne, New York, Boston, Miami, Chicago, London, Glasgow, Toronto, Montreal, Johannesburg, Tokyo, and every other city with few or many Greeks around the world.

These pockets of Hellenism, no matter if small or large, are important. And so are the stories of the people who keep them alive.

We should hear, cherish and celebrate these stories more often.

Today’s newsletter is a small ode to all unsung heroes who are keeping the Greek fire alive today all across the world, and to all those who came before them.

Here’s my ask to you: it’s the beginning of the summer, so try to plant at least three “good seeds” by the end of it. This could be having a call with an ambitious young person who will benefit from you advice. Or helping a villager whose house or harvest was affected by fire. Or supporting a cultural, scientific or social project of your liking. What you choose is totally up to you. What matters is passing along the good deed. Paying it forward. It will feel good and it will also do good. Changing Greece is up to you. :)

🔳 The Greek semiconductor industry

Semiconductors are materials that control electrical currents. They are essential components of almost every modern electronic device in the world.

If you are reading this post on your phone, laptop, tablet, smartwatch, or even AR glasses, there is a very good chance some of the chip designs and software running on your device have been made in Greece.

What! You don’t believe me? Well, it’s true.

The Greek semiconductor industry might be small, but it has been a mighty force for at least 40 years.

Let’s have a look.

A trip down the Greek semiconductor memory lane

I am no historian, so please excuse any omissions. But I do have a hunch.

The story (probably) starts where you least expect it: Crete.

Crete has been a semiconductor pioneer since the 1980s.

The Microelectronics Research Group (MRG), a joint research effort of the Department of Physics at University of Crete and the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser (IESL) at the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH), was established around 1985-1986.

MRG harnessed incredible scientific talent and given rise to many important research experiments through the years. No wonder the University of Crete has remained a top engineering hub until today.

But it’s not just Crete. Patras has also been a leader since the early 2000s.

According to local lore, the real national “big bang” started with Atmel.

Despite the closure of Atmel’s semiconductor subsidiary in 2006 (one of the early hubs of foreign companies in Greece, employing up to 140 at its height), Patras remains a powerhouse to this very day. The critical mass that came together led to the creation of one of Greece’s most successful tech companies: Think Silicon.

Think Silicon built such a deep IP stack that they were eventually acquired by Applied Materials, a global leader in semiconductor technology, in 2020 for a sum in the €25-40M range. The subsidiary (based in Patras) became a leader in ultra-low power 2D and 3D GPU as well as display processors for MCU-based microprocessor cores in embedded systems.

And yet, this is not the only semiconductor company that built amazing things in Patras. Dialog Semiconductor, a global semiconductor system designer and manufacturer, also chose to build its most important R&D hub in the city.

Thanks in no small part to the innovations produced at the Patras facility, Dialog Semiconductor was bought in 2021 by Japanese Renesas Electronics for $5.9B.

Of course, Athens could not be missing from the party. It boasts its own very impressive semiconductor success story, Helic.

Helic is a premier provider of software that analyzes and mitigates the risk of electromagnetic crosstalk for semiconductor designs. Based out of Halandri, the company was acquired by US multinational Ansys in 2019 for about $62M. Ansys is now being acquired by giant Synopsis for $35B.

Athens is also home to the reputable Institute of Nanoscience & Nanotechnology (INN) at Demokritos. INN hosts a number of semiconductor-related labs and activities. (It is also hiring for a bunch of research positions.)

Semiconductor companies operating in Greece

According to the latest review by the International Trade Administration of the U.S. Department of Commerce, Greece boasts a dynamic ecosystem of over 25+ semiconductor companies. That’s pretty wild.

The Hellenic Emerging Technologies Industry Association (HETiA) — formerly known as the Hellenic Semiconductor Industry Association (HSIA) — has been operating as an ecosystem connector and amplifier for this growing community.

Here are some of the most relevant semiconductor-related companies operating in Greece today that I have been able to identify:

• Silicon Highway

• Ublox

• Zepp (through its subsidiary Whale Micro)

There are many more companies in Greece that are part of the broader community of emerging technologies. Some of them are operating as R&D branches of large multinationals. Others are scrappy startups that are gradually attracting more attention.

What matters is that the density of semiconductor talent in Greece (often supported or advised by great Greek scientists in the US) is top notch. Crete, Patras and Athens, but also Thessaloniki, have the potential to turn the country into a much more important player in the global chip race over the next decade.

What now for Greece?

The initiatives and proposed funding stemming from the European Chips Act offer a great opportunity for Greece to build a stronger semiconductor industry.

A group of nine countries (Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Spain and the Netherlands) have already come together to form the “Semiconductor Coalition”. The purpose of this group is to work closely with the European Commission, as well as together, to improve cooperation over semiconductors and attempt to narrow the gap with the US and Asia.

HETiA is helping make moves. The most important one in my view has been its advocacy for the closer collaboration of all leading Greek research institutions and its proposal to create a Hellenic Chips Competence Centre (HCCC). These are all important steps, especially because they are led from market participants in the local industry.

The Greek semiconductor industry is a small-but-mighty force today. It’s up to us if we can turn this into a sleeping giant that can some day wake up.

Building Greece’s DARPA

In the 1960s, the US Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) commissioned a study for new vehicle designs. The US was fighting a war in Vietnam and DARPA wanted to find a better way to move troops and equipment in its difficult jungle terrain. This led to one of the wildest scientific projects of all time: researching the creation of mechanical elephants.

The mechanical elephant program was short-lived. DARPA’s Director shut it down soon after he found out, fearing that such a crazy idea would invite further scrutiny and potential funding cuts from Congress. But this was just one of many “crazy” research programs that took place in DARPA since the agency’s founding. Others include: wireless brain-to-brain telepathy, auto-repairable houses, hand-held fusion reactors, killer robo-bees, and even a terrorism futures market.

These ideas might seem far-fetched. But you know what else seemed that way a few decades ago?

• Sending a message to your aunt in real-time on the other side of the world. Thanks to the internet (whose foundations started with the ARPANET network built by DARPA in the 1960s) today that’s easier than ever.

• Navigating, tracking and timing distances correctly. Thanks to research on GPS miniaturized receivers, we now have full information about locations, routes and people (or items) in transit.

• Hiding in plain sight. Thanks to the Lockheed Have Blue POC and accompanying research, stealth aircraft left sci-fi and became real-life.

• Getting scientific predictions about the weather. Thanks to the early weather satellites co-developed by DARPA, modern meteorology was born.

DARPA has been the catalyst for many technologies that defined humanity since the mid-20th century. Yes, ideas like mechanical elephants might have been flops. But many other weren’t. The internet transformed the entire world. Stealth technology ensured US aerial supremacy for decades during the Cold War. And that’s just a tiny fraction of the innovations DARPA produced.

So what lessons can we draw from DARPA’s success? And what could a small country like Greece (facing a laundry list of internal and external threats) learn from a process that almost gave birth to mechanical elephants?

Learning from the DARPA model

Changing the world does not come without the risk of failure. This is why the mechanical elephants story is so important: the process of innovation requires an environment conducive to (repeated) flops in order for (radical) successes to be born. It requires a group of individuals who can think beyond the limits of what is possible today in order to surpass them tomorrow.

So how was the level of DARPA’s sustained innovation ever possible?

• Political will. DARPA needed President’s Dwight D. Eisenhower early conviction in 1958 to get started. But it also required the bipartisan support of Congress and many different Presidents for almost 70 years now to support the mission of the agency.

• Large budget. DARPA invests billions on research projects every year. Last year’s budget requested surpassed $4.3 billion. Continuous funding made sure the agency always has necessary resources to produce innovative outcomes.

• High ambition. The research facilitated by DARPA does not just look to introduce small incremental improvements. It aims to enable entire leaps in technologies and our understanding of the world. This means betting on risky projects and trying new things all the time.

• Long-term mindset. DARPA is not fixated in the present. Most of the projects take years, if not decades, to pan out. While there has been a focus on tangible results, this is coupled with a deeply rooted mentality of long-term planning and creating generational outcomes.

One more thing: DARPA has never been a public sector project operating in vacuum. It always worked hand-in-hand with the private sector.

DARPA provided the funding, tooling and testing ground for many cutting-edge technologies that American companies developed through the years. Without DARPA (and NASA), US tech dominance would look significantly less exceptional.

The DARPA influence around the world

It’s not just the US. Many other countries have followed the DARPA model.

The UK has built the Advanced Research & Invention Agency (ARIA). France has created the Agence de l'innovation de défense (AID). Israel has the Directorate of Defense, Research & Development (DDR&D). China has the State Administration of Science, Technology and Industry for National Defense (SASTIND). And even Turkey has the TÜBİTAK Defense Industries Research and Development Institute (TÜBİTAK-SAGE).

In almost every case, defense is a key part of the equation. Whether we like it or not, all countries are forced to take their external security and internal safety seriously, some more than others. These existential questions play an important role at the heart of statecraft, especially during times of war, bilateral threats or global instability.

That’s not a coincidence. Some of the greatest scientific discoveries of the 20th century happened around World War II and many followed during the Cold War arms-race between US and the Soviet Union. In fact, DARPA itself was created as a response to the Soviets launching Sputnik 1, the first ever artificial Earth satellite, in 1957. All other agencies followed as a response to DARPA’s success.

How would a Greek DARPA look like?

Given its geostrategic location between West and East, as well as the threatening nature of its larger neighbor Turkey, one would expect Greece to have invested considerable resources in building a DARPA-like entity in the country. And yet, this never happened.

Through the years, the country has made (some) progress in bringing its great raw scientific talent closer to its national security apparatus. But most of the efforts have been scattershot, disconnected, underfunded, heavily politicized, extremely academic and often short-lived. It feels like whatever Greece has tried so far falls significantly short of what it could have achieved if there was a unified approach to defense-oriented R&D.

Greece has a number of research institutes that fall under the wider umbrella of DARPA-style activities:

• Demokritos, the country’s National Centre of Scientific Research

• Athena Research Center, which focuses on Informatics and Computational Sciences, and is also home to the Archimedes AI & Data Science unit and (temporarily) HERON, the Hellenic Robotics Center of Excellence

• CERTH, a leading Centre for Research & Technology

• FORTH, perhaps the largest cluster of research institutes in the country

• HAI, the Hellenic Aerospace Industry, a state-owned defense company

• HIAS, the Hellenic Institute of Advanced Studies

• HCDI, the newly formed Hellenic Center for Defence Innovation

Some of the best Greek scientists in the world are employed by or affiliated with these centers and consistently produce world class research. And yet, a very small portion of these (often, highly academic) contributions have managed to enter the market successfully, meaningfully transform Greece for the better or provide the country with an operational, economic or defensive edge.

This is is a wasted opportunity of colossal proportions.

It’s time for Greece to build a centralized, systematic, apolitical, well-funded, industry-connected defense-oriented R&D unit. It’s time for a Greek DARPA.

Sadly, none of the entities mentioned above possess alone the elements necessary to make up for a proper DARPA-like agency. That includes HDCI, which is a valuable improvement, but still a far stretch from a powerful defense-fueled R&D centre (it is currently playing a much more ecosystem-supportive role).

A successful Greek DARPA agency would need the following characteristics:

• A world-class team. None of the partisan lackeys and governing party friends that tend to crowd similar organizations in Greece. Rather, it needs a group of stellar scientists, military liaisons, administrators and visionary leaders.

• True autonomy. Real distance from the worst parts of the Greek public sector and significant leeway to operate away from political considerations. It should be treated as an independent force-multiplier for the country.

• Small-scale but also long-term experiments. Both are necessary. Quick wins are important but so are long-tail projects with transformative impact.

• Significant funding. A big budget will be required with a portion secured upfront for at least a number of years. Greece needs to think big. A well-funded agency can attract top Greek scientists from abroad but also retain a significant portion of talented young Greeks who leave the country today.

• Connection to industry. There needs to be a direct and open link with the commercial world, including public-private partnerships and grants to new startups (both equity-based and dilutive).

• Political unity. An initiative of such scale and importance does not have room for ideologies. There should be a united national effort behind such an agency, over and above partisan lines.

• Bridge with the diaspora. The large cluster of talented Greek scientists, engineers and professionals abroad should be engaged and leveraged.

Time to be bold

If Greece wants to keep up with the rest of the world in an age of global asymmetric threats and rapid technological changes, it will need more than just great weather, fantastic food and a beautiful scenery.

A Greek defense R&D powerhouse has the potential to channel the country’s amazing local talent into real-world breakthroughs and actionable solutions.

Creating Greece’s DARPA is a bold but necessary step for the country.

Time to build our own equivalent of mechanical elephants.

⚛ A new Christofilos Effect

Who was Christofilos? What was his Effect? And why do we need a new one?

All very valid questions for 99.9% of the people who read this newsletter.

Nicholas Christofilos — the “Crazy Greek”

Nicholas Christofilos is the greatest Greek physicist you probably never heard of.

According to the amazingly titled blog “Greatest Greeks”:

“Nicholas Christofilos was an autodidact physicist, a pioneer in the field of accelerator and nuclear physics, who first conceived the strong-focusing principle. The “Crazy Greek” as he was nicknamed by the press, went on to have a highly prestigious career in the United States and his name today is connected with one of the largest space experiments ever conducted on Earth, Operation Argus.”

Christofilos was born in Boston (USA) but raised in Athens (Greece). He attended the National Technical University of Athens and graduated with a degree in Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. During World War II, he worked for an elevator maintenance company in Athens, before creating his own.

The story would have probably ended around here if Christofilos did not possess a deep amateur passion about physics and spent his spare time learning more about fundamental particles. It was this passion (and apparently his ample free time maintaining elevators in Greece) that allowed him to develop his theory on strong focusing, the prelude to the famous “Christofilos Effect”.

Because he did not publish his discovery in any official physics journal, even though it was patented, his discovery went unnoticed for years. During that time, another group of famous physicists (Courant, Livingston and Snyder) independently made a similar discovery.

The story of Christofilos finding out he was not alone is pretty amazing:

“In 1953 Nick Christofilos visited the U.S. and while reading the Physical Review at the Brooklyn Public Library came upon the Courant, Livingston and Snyder article. He thought that his idea had been used without acknowledgement and rushed to Brookhaven where he was shown around by John Blewett. After some excited discussion it became clear that Christofilos deserved the credit for the earliest enunciation of the principle of strong focussing but also that the Brookhaven discovery was completely independent.

What makes the discovery by Christofilos even crazier is that it happened with little formal knowledge, limited contact with others and almost no access to the top literature in physics at the time. All he had was his perseverance.

Eventually, Christofilos was offered a position to the Brookhaven National Laboratory and his patented research was then used by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission in various particle accelerators (then under construction).

Nicholas Christofilos led a prestigious scientific career, making groundbreaking discoveries in physics and leading some of the craziest experiments of all time (more on that in a bit). Some of his top achievements include: the Christofilos Effect, the invention of the Linear Induction Accelerator, research in thermonuclear fusion and applications of physics in defense and security.

Christofilos was also nominated for a Nobel Prize in Physics in 1971.

In the words of famed American scientist Herbert York:

“Nick was a remarkable idea man. The ideas were usually not good, but they were really remarkable in that they were the kind of ideas that nobody else had. Nick really was a genius in a very important sense -he often invented things that required two new ideas simultaneously, which is something that normally hardly anybody ever does.”

The “Christofilos Effect” — what was it?

The “Christofilos Effect” refers to the entrapment of electrons from nuclear weapons in the Earth's magnetic field.

I will kid neither myself nor my beloved readers by pretending I can explain strange scientific phenomena better than Wikipedia’s amazing pool of crowdsourced experts. If you want a full scientific explanation, you can read this beautifully explanatory article.

What I can tell you more about is where his theory was used: Operation Argus.

Operation Argus was a series of U.S. low-yield, high-altitude nuclear weapons and missile tests secretly conducted over the South Atlantic Ocean by the Defense Nuclear Agency almost 70 years ago.

“In late summer of 1958, the United States Navy Task Force 88 (TF 88) conducted one of the U.S.’s most expeditiously planned and executed nuclear tests operations, codenamed ARGUS, when it conducted three high-altitude nuclear tests in the south Atlantic Ocean. […] When the Eisenhower Administration subsequently released the occurrence of these tests to the public in the spring of 1959, it was hailed as the “greatest scientific experiment ever conducted.

[…] The Argus nuclear tests grew out an idea conceived of by Lawrence Livermore physicist Nicholas Christofilos.

[…] More than 40 ground stations throughout the world tracked and/or monitored telemetry of Explorer IV. The combined data from Explorer IV, the sounding rockets, and from surface stations all confirmed the presence of the effects predicted by Nicholas Christofilos.”

Many decades later, Operation Argus has left a very interesting legacy.

We are all still here, so nothing to be scared of.

Why do we need new “Christofilos Effects”?

Some people argue against the casual polymath model. But I beg to differ.

How did an autodidact that started working for an elevator maintenance company in Athens during the German occupation end up becoming a pioneer in the field of accelerator and nuclear physics?

I don’t know for sure, but I have a hunch.

High level of multidisciplinarity. Endless curiosity. And a dose of craziness.

Christofilos transcended disciplines. By training in classical music at a very young age, he was inspired to look for patterns everywhere. By studying Mechanical and Electrical Engineering, he understood at a much deeper level the application of many physical concepts that he learned in his spare time. And by marrying theory and practice, he was able to see a fuller picture that many of us often desperately lack.

Christofilos was also curious by nature. Apparently, as a child he would spend his time inventing improvised radio transmitters. As he grew older, the way he taught himself physics was by devouring any foreign (usually American or German) book he could find at some obscure Athenian corner.

And yes, he was a bit crazy too. But just the right amount to become a scientific pioneer, come up with a revolutionary (at the time) theory and also dabble in some of the wildest nuclear physics experiments of all time.

Why are these traits important?

Because change does not come from many of us conformists.

You probably know this very famous Steve Jobs quote.

This is exactly what Christofilos was all about: a “crazy Greek” who changed the world, even if most of us do not realize or even know about it today.

The theory that became known as the “Christofilos Effect” is merely an example of wildly successful (and successfully wild) out-of-the-box thinking. Christofilos’ overall contributions moved the level of our scientific understanding further and had a profound impact on thermonuclear dynamics, atomic energy and space technology ever since.

And this is exactly why we need not just one but many more “Christofilos Effects”.

Not about particle accelerators or nuclear physics per se.

But about any remarkable new ideas, theories, inventions, products, approaches created by people once thought “mad” that later became known as “visionary”.

So, here’s to all the “Crazy Greeks” out there crafting your own type of “Effect”.

🕴️ Greek management culture sucks

If you work for a Greek company, there is a very good chance you hate your boss.

This is not a coincidence.

A large number of Greek (typically family owned) business owners are awful managers. On top of that, most senior managers lack even basic leadership skills. And the majority of middle managers never experienced any real mentorship so in turn become terrible handlers of junior members themselves. As a result, almost all young employees are miserable in their jobs.

It is a grim yet very real vicious cycle.

Greek management culture sucks from top to bottom.

And there is simply no sugarcoating it.

The Great Workplace paradox

Let’s start with a given: there is no perfect boss.

And yes, being a boss is often a thankless job that comes primarily with problems.

But a Greek business owner or manager that believes “well, this does not apply to me” should think again. Terrible management practices are extremely widespread in Greece. If you honestly believe that your leadership style or management culture is great, you are either an exceptionally rare endangered species or excellent in self-delusion.

(If you are a faithful reader of this publication, don’t worry, you are one of the good ones.)

In a uniquely Greek paradox, we have way more (advertorial) lists celebrating “great workplaces” than actual great workplaces in the country. But go ask a random employee in some of these highly-praised companies and the picture that emerges is often starkly different from what you hear in these shiny lists.

To be clear: a demanding manager, a high-paced workplace, a culture of ambition — all these are not problems but often key ingredients to successful companies.

But in Greece these are married with toxic environments of power (with few checks and balances), inhuman managerial behaviors (that are not just tolerated but rewarded), rampant sexism (especially from men in senior positions towards women in levels below them), the assumption that bosses own their employees (even beyond work), clever tricks to bypass labour laws (either not to pay Christmas/Easter bonuses or avoid clocking in overtime work), unclear goals about career progression (that either is ridiculously slow or just never comes) and almost no real mentorship opportunities (making bad behaviors accepted as normal and then copied ad infinitum).

Not every Greek company has these issues. Some are real gems in a vast sea of terribleness. But more than enough exhibit these bad behaviors to warrant talking about this issue openly and seriously.

What does the data say?

Enough with my polemic. Let’s look at the numbers now.

Only 44% of Greeks say that their company is a great place to work at.

This places us one step from the bottom (18th out of 19 European countries).

If we plot that against labour productivity, Greece is a uniquely negative outlier.

Clearly, the quality of our workplaces is also tied inextricably with how well we work compared to other countries.

And what about how long we work compared to our peers?

For yet another year, in 2024 Greece emerged as the country where people work the longest weekly hours in the EU (only Serbia and Turkey surpassed us, but neither is an EU Member State).

So, Greeks work long hours and also don’t work efficiently. Why?

Proper leadership is severely lacking in Greek workplaces.

Out of 19 European countries, Greece ranks:

• 17th in high trust leadership in the workplace

• 17th in leadership proximity skills in the workplace

• 16th in psychological safety of employees

Unfortunately, this is not a new reality. Greece has traditionally scored very low when it came to workplace management practices.

Time to change the picture

There is a great meme I’ve seen make the rounds about Greek office culture: “when the boss suddenly arrives, and everyone pretends they are working.”

Why is that? If you ask the average business owner, their reply will be “there is just not enough good talent out there willing to do the work.” And they are partly right: as I have often said in the past, the government’s current subsidies-on-steroids approach reduces incentives significantly for people to look for work.

But there is another piece to the equation: exceptional talent does not always find a great leader; however, a great leader can always shape exceptional talent.

It’s not rocket science. Few simple things can make all the difference:

• Treat people as actual humans (not property of the company)

• Pay employees what they deserve (not what businesses can get away with)

• Provide clear guidelines about tasks and expectations for roles/progression

• Reward great talent not just monetarily but with more responsibility

• Have zero tolerance for disrespect and institute a “no assholes” policy

If you are already doing most (if not all) of that, then that’s fantastic. Not everyone does. In fact, most Greek companies don’t.

And if you think I’m exaggerating, I’m glad. Help prove me wrong by being a force of change and making sure that terrible management practices become a thing of the past in Greece, and not part of its present or even future.

Time to change the picture.

📊 Spotlight: A statesman from a different era

Konstantinos Tsatsos was the second President of the Third Hellenic Republic.

I recently bumped into an interview he gave to Nikos Dimou back in 1987. The full interview from ERT’s archives is worth listening to but parts of it are also included in a great documentary from the Vouli channel (see below).

The difference with Greece’s politicians today is striking. Listening to Tsatsos speak, I was left with a deep sense of reverence for the past but also a sad feeling that such iconic and committed leaders are extremely rare today.

🦄 The Greek VC ecosystem

Greece is not just about the three cardinal S-es: sun, sex, and souvlaki.

It’s also becoming a country of startups, scale-ups, and serious venture capital (VC).

Over the past 15 years, the Greek VC ecosystem has transformed from a small niche market and a few international Greek VCs into a dynamic global force that is fueling innovation both locally and around the world.

Local Greek VC Landscape

An overview

At home, funds like Marathon, BigPi and Metavallon have not only nurtured early-stage companies to new heights, they have also proven that Greek startups can scale globally and even achieve meaningful exits.

One of the most successful Greek funds, VentureFriends, has started spreading its wings outside of Greece, morphing into a new type of pan-European investor. Genesis Ventures has recently become the country’s first angel/venture co-investment vehicle.

Today, local Greek startups have more access to capital than ever before.

All this would not have been possible without EquiFund, perhaps the single most important accelerant of Greece’s entrepreneurship scene.

EquiFund’s enormous liquidity injection over the past decade — hundreds of millions of euros from EU vehicles and the Greek governments — into the local ecosystem has helped most Greek venture funds create their funds and has led to hundreds of Greek startups receive much needed funding.

HDBI and EIF have been fundamental carriers of this growth, having invested in the vast majority of Greek-based funds.

Another very important stakeholder in the ecosystem is Endeavor Greece. The Greek chapter of the global entrepreneurship community is one of the most active and resourceful in the world. In fact, it has been a key source of support and capital for local startups, especially those that are moving gradually into scale-up territory.

Thanks primarily to the support of the local Greek VC ecosystem and some of its key enablers, Greece has seen a number of exits in recent years, gradually inching above the $100 million mark. This is an important practical but also psychological threshold, as it shows that meaningful results can take place in the country.

Interestingly, the tech company with the largest acquisition to date — BETA CAE’s acquisition for $1.2B by Cadence Design Systems in 2024 — has not been a local VC success story. However, there is hope for the top to be changing soon. There is at least one venture backed scale-up (Blueground) expected to make a unicorn-level-plus exit in the next few years. One could also mention Viva Wallet’s embattled partial acquisition (at a $2.2 billion valuation) by JPMorgan into the mix, as the company was previously supported by local family offices that do venture investments on the side.

2025 VC investment expectations

For 2025, 60% of top Greek VCs expect the investment landscape to be better than last year. They also see talent as the top asset of local startups but business acumen as the biggest missing piece for domestic entrepreneurs.

• 3 VC-style funds actively investing in/from Cyprus

• majority of funds invest in Pre-Seed and Seed stages

• at least 9 new VC funds announced in 2024, with 5+ coming this year

• more than €1 billion raised by Greek VC funds since 2010

Greek Angel Investors

There is a large number of people, both in and out of Greece, that invest in new startups as angel investors. Greek angel investors invest both as individuals and as part of angel syndicates — that is, groups of angels that invest together.

In 2024, 3 out of 10 Greek founded companies had an angel involved in their deal.

According to a survey from 2022, 74% of Greek angel investors are between 25-44 years-old and 83% of them are men. The latter part is changing thanks to the work of local women angels like Marina Bouki, Ariadne Velissaropoulos and Maria Koletsou that are backing amazing new female-led startups, as well as Marina Hatsopoulos and Chrysanthi Vakla who are investing from abroad.

One of the reasons angels have multiplied in Greece is that the government has introduced a number of tax incentives for angel investing. Here are the most recent changes that apply starting in 2025.

You can find Greeks that have previously invested as angels in AngelMatch OR via Linkedin (look up “angel investor” together with the quotes and limit your search to Athens or your first/second connections). There are more than you might think, including the former co-founder of Google Maps, Lars Rasmussen, a serial angel investor based out of Greece, who together with his wife Elomida Visviki helped kickstart the innovation festival Panathenea.

Here are the most prominent angel syndicate groups active in Greece today:

• Genesis Ventures: VC that co-invests with angels

• Heban: early-stage investments / generalist focus

• Theti Club: early-stage investments / generalist focus

• Blossom Ventures: early-stage investments / female founders

• Astylab Ventures: early-stage ventures / sustainability

In the past, there was also an active angel fund in California called the Silicon Valley Greek Seed Fund. This entity is no longer active, but it backed a number of interesting companies and important Greek technologists in the past. This is a model that I really hope we see replicated more often by diaspora Greeks around the world.

There are many Greek angel groups operating on an ad hoc fashion in/out of Greece.

Venture Studios

Greece is also home to a few venture studios. While these do not qualify as “venture capital” proper, they are still very close siblings and operate in the same industry.

Venture studios are small organizations that act as collaborative “labs” for new ventures. They are part investors and part builders, helping early stage founders polish their idea, create their startup and start scaling it. Venture studios are often very involved in the beginning of a startup’s journey, and sometimes they become embedded in these companies for life.

Here are some of Greece’s most prominent venture studios:

• Starttech Ventures: venture studio and also seed investor in new ideas

• Ideas Forward: based in Thessaloniki, behind many GR ecosystem projects

• Lateralus Ventures: venture studio based in Athens, behind nxtlvl

• E17 Ventures: venture studio based in Athens

Venture studios are not that common in Greece, but we still have a good number for such a small country.

A large community all over the world

VCs of Greek origin form a dynamic group of investors both inside and outside the country. And yet, there is still so much more that they could be doing together.

In Greece, many of the VC funds tend to have a surface level relationship at best or might not even be on speaking terms with each other. This is evident by the extremely low number of co-investments that have happened in the past decade between Greek VC funds, or by the public spats that have taken place over time. If we hope to see more meaningful results, greater collaboration is necessary in the future.

Outside of Greece, most VC investors of Greek origin typically do not interact with each other that often, except if they invest in the same domain or live in the same area (i.e. NYC, SF, London). In my opinion this is a missed opportunity, especially since our common language and culture could be a key enabler to forging stronger bonds across the world and getting access to better dealflow.

My belief is that the soft power of Greek VCs and angel investors is much larger than they themselves realize, especially when it becomes more interconnected and channeled towards supporting Greek talent.

This list is a small contribution to their amazing efforts. I hope it can function as the beginning of higher awareness and deeper collaboration.

Greece's intellectual property

Greece ranks 45th among 133 countries in the Global Innovation Index (GII) for 2024.

Greece’s innovation ranking has not really improved over the past decade.

One key part of innovation is the development of Intellectual Property (IP).

This is what I want to talk about today.

Greeks and intellectual property go way back together

Greece has a long history of inventing things.

You should not be surprised to learn that Greeks might have invented the concept of IP protection as well.

One of the first known references to intellectual property protection dates from 500 B.C.E., when chefs in the Greek colony of Sybaris were granted year-long monopolies for creating particular culinary delights. (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)

Yes, you read that right.

Greek migrants in Italy invented IP to protect their food recipes more than 2,500 years ago.

How awesome is that!?

Since then, a lot has happened.

About a century ago (in 1920), Greece first implemented a system to protect industrial property and inventions. You can find some of these early patents here.

About half a century ago (in 1976), Greece officially joined the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). WIPO is the international authority responsible for promoting and safeguarding IP rights across the world.

There are two main national IP offices in Greece:

• the Hellenic Copyright Organization (for copyright issues)

• the Hellenic Industrial Property Organization (for industrial property), which is also supported by the Hellenic Industrial Property Academy (HIPA) since 2019

IP law is complex locally but also globally. Greece has been closely following international mandates, harmonizing its IP legislation to comply with both common EU regulations and WIPO rules.

The Greek government recently created a simple yet helpful page to help people register trademarks, patents and designs.

How long are IP protections valid in Greece for? Well, it depends on the type:

• Patents: 20 years of protection

• Trademarks: 10 years (can be renewed indefinitely for periods of 10 years)

• Utility Model Certificates: 7 years

• Industrial designs: 5 years of basic validity term that can be renewed four times for a total of 25 years

But it is not just industrial IP and scientific breakthroughs that need to be safeguarded. IP protection also extends to the creative space.

Fun fact: Works of authorship (e.g. any original creative work such as a literary piece, musical composition, artistic creation) is protected by copyright upon its creation. There is no need for a filling or other registration.

In Greece, a work of authorship is protected by copyright upon its creation, without the need for a filing or other registration formality. Despite the lack of registration or filing requirements, the Hellenic Copyright Organisation (HCO) introduced a timestamp digital service (available at www.timestamp.gr) in 2019, which enables authors to certify the date of creation of their work. The copyrighted work is recorded on an online platform operated by the HCO against payment of a symbolic monetary amount, which depends on the size of the file uploaded. That’s pretty awesome if you ask me.

Greece’s intellectual property vs the world

According to the International IP Index 2025, Greece’s overall Index score has increased from 35.71 in the last edition to 38.46 this year.

Greece ranks 11th in Europe & Central Asia, slightly below the regional average.

One of the main reasons for the recent increase seems to be improved incentives for cutting-edge innovation, which is a very welcome piece of news.

In 2023, Greece ranks:

• 45th (out of 166 countries) in terms of patent applications

• 80th (out of 196 countries) in terms of trademark fillings

• 36th (out of 153 countries ) in terms of industrial design

Why is intellectual property important for Greece?

There are many reasons why Greece should care about (and invest in) higher IP creation and enforcement. Four areas are highly correlated with successful IP policy:

• R&D, innovation and technology transfer (across industry and academia)

• Investment attraction

• Creation of high-value exports

• Proliferation of higher-value jobs

These all can be combined together under one theme: building and nurturing a successful Science & Technology (S&T) ecosystem.

While there is a lot of innovation density in Greece, the country has yet to become a Top 100 S&T cluster according to WIPO.

Not all hope is lost. Greece is systematically trying to grow its innovation footprint in recent years and slowly taking IP more seriously. Interestingly, the International IP Enforcement Summit 2025 will take place in Athens this year.

Could that be a sign of better things to come for the country?

Loulis Mills has 243 years of history in Greece’s flour industry.

7 generations have managed this multi-centennial Greek business, which originally started with one small mill back in 1782 at Turkish-occupied Aetorahi of Ioannina.

Today, the Greek flour maker offers more than 320 flour products, has been included in the Greek stock market, boasts two state-of-the-art production units in Sourpi and Keratsini (with a private pier at the largest commercial port in Greece) and is exporting to dozens of countries abroad.

If you are eating a flour-based product anywhere in the country, chances are its basis has been created at Loulis Mills.

Who thought flour could be this exciting and durable?

Rockets, robots and supercars made in Greece

What if I told you that Greece is building rockets, robots and supercars?

You would probably laugh.

What if I said that these are actually built by young students in their early 20s?

“No way”, you’d reply. “Enough with the jokes.”

Well… the joke is on anyone who has not been paying close attention in recent years.

A new generation of young Greek innovators is pushing the boundaries of aerospace, robotics and automotive engineering, proving that homegrown Greek talent can make waves globally. These are curious and ambitious high school and university students that are competing on an international level and often making it all the way to the top.

Rockets made in Greece

At Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (AUTH), the Aristotle Space & Aeronautics Team (ASAT) is quite literally reaching for the stars. This team of passionate students designs, builds, and launches experimental rockets, competing in international competitions like the Spaceport America Cup.

ASAT conducts research through two multidisciplinary departments: Aeronautics (focusing on UAVs) and Rocketry (focusing on, well, rockets). Hybrid propulsion, high-powered SRAD motors, avionics bays, antenna systems and flight autonomy are all household terms for this team.

ASAT ranks amongst the top 10 student teams in Europe in both fields, coming 9th in Aeronautics and 7th in Rocketry in some of the last few competitions.

Robots made in Greece

Greece is full of awesome young aspiring roboticists.

WRO Hellas is the official organizer of the World Robot Olympiad in Greece. In World Robotics Olympiad (WRO) 2024, Greek team bitLab from Kalamata won 2nd place in the world (silver medal) and came 1st in Europe, bringing Team Greece the 10th overall medal in its history. For context, more than 560 teams from 87 countries in the world competed in WRO 2024.

The Greek National Robotics Team (GNRT) represents the country in the FIRST Global Challenge, an olympics-style international robotics competition. Greek students between 12-18 years old participate in GNRT-sponsored bootcamps and some of the best are selected to join the team. In 2024, the global finals of the competition were hosted by GNRT in Athens.

Universities are equally active. Some of the top universities in Greece have both robotics R&D labs as well as competitive clubs.

We have the amazing Intelligent Robotics and Automation Laboratory (IRAL) and the super cool Legged Robots Team at NTUA. The impressive Automation & Robotics Lab at AUTH. The Robotics Club at the University of Patras (UPatras), with the famous line following robot series “Dromeas”, supported by the university’s stellar Robotics Group. In the summer of 2025, UPatras will also be home to Optimization for Robotics Summer School (OptRob-25). The Student Robotics Team supported by the great ESDALab in the University of the Peloponnese (which has also participated in WRO competitions). The Beyond Orbit team, which has designed and built the first Greek rover to compete in the European Rover Challenge space robotics competition, comprised by students across NTUA, UPatras and other Greek institutions. And of course, the recently created Hellenic Robotics Center of Excellence established at the prestigious Athena RC.

Supercars made in Greece

Prometheus Eco Racing is the awesome energy efficiency racing team of the National Technical University of Athens. The team is comprised entirely of university students: undergraduates, master students and PhD candidates design and build high-efficiency electric vehicles that compete against top university teams from all over the world, typically at the annual Shell Eco-marathon.

Prometheus is researching, building and bringing to market sustainable and efficient solutions for eco-friendly mobility and electric battery technology. While dedicated to sustainable engineering, the team is also focused on performance and cutting-edge design, which has helped them gain a strong reputation among their peers.

A new generation of Greek techies brings hope

Thanks to the efforts of young students passionate about technology ​(as well as their supporters), a new era of innovation is unfolding in Greece. Their curiosity, ambition and achievements reflect a nation that is tackling the future heads on.

There is enough “doom and gloom” in and out of Greece these days. Let this be a small break of optimism and reminder that when Greeks put their minds and hearts into something, great things can come out of it.

But I can already hear many people saying: “These are just kids?” They are not building real products. And who cares about these competitions, anyways?”

Well, I completely disagree. Our youth will be the main driving force of meaningful change for Greece. And it is already showing promising signs of being able to build amazing things, both in and out of the country.

But if this is still not enough for you, here is a small sample of companies making waves across aerospace, robotics and automotive engineering in Greece today:

🤖 Greece in the race of AI

We’ve talked a couple of times already about Greece’s relationship with AI.

First, we’ve covered the large, impactful and global Greek AI ecosystem.

Then, we discussed how and how many people in Greece have started using AI.

Now, it’s time to see how Greece compares to the rest of the world.

Let’s jump in.

The Global AI Index 2024

The Global AI Index is the first index to benchmark nations on their level of investment, innovation and implementation of artificial intelligence.

How does Greece perform here?

Greece scores 9.24. The top country in the ranking is the USA with a score of 100.

The final Index is a combination of absolute and relative measures that are broken down into ‘Scale’ and ‘Intensity’.

• ‘Scale’ measures a nation’s absolute AI capacity, showing its output on the global stage. US comes by far first here, followed by China, and then everyone else follows far behind.

• ‘Intensity’ measures AI capacity relative to the size of a country’s population or economy. The leading countries here are Singapore, Israel and Switzerland.

Greece has relatively good level of AI intensity (ranks 34th) but is not as strong in terms of scale (ranks 52th).

Overall, Greece ranks 42nd in The Global AI Index for 2024.

Not great, but not terrible either.

Let’s drill down a little bit more.

If we look at the most important adoption and innovation drivers, Greece lags across every relevant indicator.

This underperformance is not just against global leaders, but also against comparable countries in the EMEA region (like Italy, Spain and Israel).

Digital Economy and Society Index 2024

According to the European Commission’s Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), Greece ranks pretty low in terms of AI readiness compared to its peers.

In 2022, Greece’s AI readiness score according to DESI was around 25th in EU.

This position marginally improved to 23th in 2024.

This is still quite low, but on an upward trajectory.

Government AI readiness 2024

Greece ranks 59th out of 188 countries worldwide in the annual Government AI Readiness report for 2024 prepared by Oxford Insights. The Index ranks governments based on how well they have integrated AI into public service delivery.

Again, not terrible, but not great either.

The AI Maturity Matrix 2024

BCG recently published a report ranking economies based on their AI maturity.

Let’s look at the distribution of countries in terms of AI adoption.

To be totally honest, this chart does not tells us very much. It is typical “consultspeak” (sorry to my consulting readers, I love you, but we both know this is true).

A slightly more interesting chart is that of AI readiness: Greece ranks in the top 75% group, i.e. below average.

OECD AI Policy Observatory

Greece ranks above the OECD average in terms of prevalence of AI-skilled workers.

This ranking draws its data from Linkedin. In simple terms, what this chart shows us is that the self-reported AI skills of Greek talent on Linkedin is above average.

Greece is also the country with the second largest net migration outflows of AI talent to the rest of the world (after Israel).

This means that Greece exports a larger number of AI talent engineers than it attracts.

Greek AI talent is clearly very sought after. It will be important to find a way to leverage it even better and establish the domestic reasons that will retain it and keep it coming back.

Let’s look at recent news that offer some hope.

Exciting news about the Greek AI scene

There are a many promising stories about the rising Greek AI ecosystem. On a high level, here are the three most interesting ones for me.

NeurIPS performance remains high

Greece has consistently achieved a very strong presence in the top AI conference in the world, NeurIPS, throughout the years.

During the latest conference that took place in 2024, the researchers affiliated with the Archimedes Research Unit at Athena Research Center in Athens made more than 38 groundbreaking contributions. Many more Greeks from around the world participated with cutting-edge research.

Pharos AI factory created

• Pharos, one of the first AI factories funded by the EU, will be based in Greece. AI factories bring together three essential components: supercomputers, data and human capital.

The project is intended to serve as an AI hub for academia, research, the public sector, and private companies in Greece. It aims to work closely with and bring together talented AI researchers, new startups and small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs).

Pharos has a total budget of €30 million and has just started its construction, with an expected total development duration of 36 months.

“Greeks in AI” conference launches

I left the best for last. This is by far my favorite piece of news on the topic.

The inaugural Greeks in AI 2025 conference is predicted (by me) to be the greatest tech event to take place in Greece this year.

If you are a technical person that loves AI, or a non-technical person that wants to learn from the very best, this is the perfect conference for you.

The event is organized by some of the greatest Greek AI researchers in the world. This includes top experts in robotics, machine vision and deep learning. The conference enjoys the cross-institutional support of Archimedes, HIAS, HERON and FORTH — some of the top Greek scientific institutes out there.

Registrations have just opened. You don’t want to miss out on it!

Conclusion

Recent AI initiatives offer glimmers of hope and our local talent exhibits immense potential. However, Greece still has a very long way to go in the global race of AI.

My hope is we take this race seriously, invest proper resources, leverage our large community of AI experts, properly train people for these new tools and stay away from political gimmicks.

🇬🇷🧠 Greece's brain drain finally reversing

I never thought I would live to see the day.

It’s pretty remarkable, really.

2023 was the year that Greece finally reversed its brain drain.

So… what now!?

From “brain drain” to “brain (re)gain”

According to the latest data from Eurostat, in 2023 immigration of Greek citizens back to Greece surpassed emigration to other countries for the first time since the crisis started.

Greece recorded its lowest emigration flows (32.8k Greek citizens leaving) since 2010 and its largest immigration flows (47.2k Greek citizens returning) on record.

I recently talked about this in the context of my Greek economic myth-busting article.

Some people might fret. Others will try to find 100 different excuses to deny this is even happening. But the reality is clear: more Greeks are coming back to Greece today than are leaving it. And that’s an important reversal of fortunes for our country.

The data has been pointing towards this direction for a number of years. Moreover, there have been many anecdotal examples of people who chose to move back — especially after COVID hit, social media were full of such stories.

Obviously, this does not change the fact that many Greeks are still opting to leave the country. This is still an important, undeniable fact. Many people believe that we should focus more on finding ways to reduce these outflows. But why would we ever want to stop Greeks from leaving the country?

Smart Greeks go abroad, experience amazing things, receive better skills, learn from the top experts in their fields, build strong relationships, work in the best companies in the world, make some good money, and importantly, build higher standards about what they expect from themselves and from a well-functioning society.

We should want more people to leave the country, not less.

The problem is not Greeks leaving. The main issue is bringing back as many of them as possible while letting those that prefer to live abroad thrive on a global level, and connect those two parts in a way that adds value for everyone.

How do we do that?

From “Rebrain Greece” to “Reimagining Greece”

To be clear: what we are talking about here is the reversal of the trend of Greek brain drain, not a turn-around in absolute figures. Hundreds of thousands of Greeks have left the country since 2009 and still remain abroad. It will be extremely hard to win most of them back. Many will just never choose to do so. But…

Bringing everyone back to Greece cannot and should not be the objective.

• Why it cannot be the objective (pragmatic POV): Diaspora groups are not monolithic. A large portion of Greek emigres have already built their lives abroad — they have started families (often with foreign spouses), found well-paying jobs and spent years trying to fit in. Many of them have also experienced significant injustice while still in Greece only to find themselves in conducive environments abroad that provided them with all the opportunities they needed to flourish. No matter how much Greece improves for the better (and we all know it will not become Switzerland overnight), these people have already decided long ago that they are not interested in coming back any time soon. We need to accept that.

• Why it should not be the objective (strategic POV): The large Greek diaspora is one of the country’s greatest strengths. Greece needs as much of its soft power abroad as it can get, especially in these geopolitically troubled times. It also must allow diaspora Greeks to get as much out of their experience abroad as possible before they ever decide to come back. All the amazing Greeks living, working and thriving abroad should be seen as valuable assets and a powerful influencing factor at a time when old global alliances are tested and new ones are being forged.

A few years ago, the Greek government created Rebrain Greece, an initiative with an inspiring and valiant goal: bring back to Greece some of the top minds that left the country during the crisis. There are many parts involved, but the most relevant one is regular visits by Greek Ministers and representatives of large Greek employers to countries with large clusters of diaspora Greeks. In theory, it is a pretty cool concept.

In practice, many young people feel very distrustful towards the initiative and the claims made by the government’s representatives (see here, here and here). I find many of the comments unfair (and in some cases, full of clear ideological biases or even partisan colours). And yet, there are also many legitimate concerns about how this initiative is set up and marketed. And of course, many of the jobs promoted are sadly not as amazing as advertised or pertain to companies with cultures that will never be able to attract serious talent from abroad (and help them stay for good).

The key to repatriation is making Greece progressively better. Fixing public institutions, closing the gap with the rest of the EU, increasing the number and quality of opportunities for younger people and making the system more fair for everyone. That’s what most Greeks abroad care about in order to return.

But that’s not what I want to focus on today. I actually believe there are many good intentions and caring people behind the Rebrain initiative. I also see it as part of a series of multiple necessary steps to stop the “bleeding” of talent.

Rather, I want to talk about something altogether different: a change in our mentality.

It’s time for Greece to transition from actively trying to bring Greeks back to redefining their sphere of influence on a global level.

Governmental visits from Rebrain Greece might be useful to an extent, but they should not be expected to move the needle in the large scheme of things. Diaspora Greeks that do not want to return will probably not change their minds, while those that do want to return will end up doing so regardless of any governmental promotional visits.

My proposal: let’s turn the Rebrain initiative into a Reimagination movement.

We need to think less about repatriation as a single and unwavering objective, and more about how we can build a dynamic, transnational and united community based on Greek cultural heritage that exists all across the globe.

Time to think big.

Activating the large Greek diaspora

The Greek global diaspora population is estimated at about 5 million. That’s a pretty spectacular number given that the entire population of Greece is about 10 million.

There are many important countries around the world that are full of Greeks.

Let’s look at some of them:

United Kingdom

United States

Germany

Canada

Australia

Evidently, there are a ton of Greeks out there. But what’s the best way for all of them to come together? And what can we do to enable that?

Nation-building takes place both in and out of a country, and diaspora groups play a key role in that. Political scientist Harris Mylonas has written extensively about the topic of diaspora management and how it affects the geo-strategic power of countries. So has Jennifer Cavounidis, primarily on the potential of the new Greek diaspora. Deon Policy Institute’s work on the wider Hellenic diaspora and SEESOX’s Greek diaspora project are also two very important contributions to the discourse.

Here are a few critical policy priorities that Greece should be focusing on:

• Creating dedicated global/local diaspora institutions. The Rebrain platform is a great first step, but it is time to create a more structured and long-term way of communicating with the large (permanent) Greek diaspora. Repatriation should obviously be part of it, but not the exclusive focus. While the Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs (MFA) can be involved, this should be an organization that can also act independently. We need more and better connecting nodes between Greece and the rest of the world.

• Facilitating the process to (dual) citizenship. Receiving Greek citizenship is a notoriously difficult process, even for the most well-prepared and enthusiastic diaspora Greeks. There is an incredible number of expats and people of Greek origin that want to become Greek citizens (or help a family member, usually a child or spouse, to get their citizenship). Most of them are either unable to even start the process, or caught in an insane web of bureaucratic barriers that moves slow or even non-existent speeds. This needs to change asap.

• Integrating the diaspora in broader foreign policy goals. Effective diaspora strategies are most successful when they can become part of a global foreign policy framework. This is already happening to a certain extent with the very successful Hellenic American Leadership Council (HALC) in the United States, with some similar efforts having started in in EU/UK. But much more needs to be done, and so far there has been little effort from the MFA to coordinate the many different diaspora populations across the world.

A call to action

So… what now?

Over the past decade, we’ve talked a lot about Greece’s brain drain. Gradually, we started talking about the potential of brain (re)gain too. Focusing on the latter is certainly an improvement over the former.

And yet, we need to push our thinking one step further.

We need to stop thinking in binary terms (in/out of Greece, leaving/returning). We need to reimagine the role and potential of Greece on a global level.

This is a call to action not only for policymakers, but for every person of Greek heritage around the world, regardless of their age, profile or location.

It is time to embrace a future where our contributions can collectively shape a more influential and globally connected Greece. A future where Greeks can work together and build a greater entity regardless if we are based in-country or abroad.

There is more to Greece than meets the eye. And that something is centered in our homeland, but scattered around the world, ready to flourish.

💶 Salaries in Greece (2025)

Welcome to the 2nd edition of my annual investigation into the state of Greek salaries. This is a compilation of the best data on salaried employment in the country across a range of sources, metrics and timeframes.

Let’s jump straight in.

Balance of salaried employment

2024 ended with +70k net new salaried jobs being created in Greece.

This is the lowest positive difference since 2012.

This number should be interpreted as a potential cause of concern for the government but also a sign of the increasing tightness in labour market conditions (given that unemployment keeps steadily falling).

Minimum wage

Greece’s minimum wage has increased considerably during the last decade.

The Greek government has just announced another minimum salary increase.

From €586 in 2018 the minimum wage in Greece (on a 14-month basis) will now be €880 starting on April 1st 2025. That is quite a spectacular jump.

Here is how the minimum wage will look like based on experience, while factoring in different taxes and social security contributions.

Contrary to what you will hear today from the majority of Greek journalists, political parties and academic economists, I will go as far as to say that the minimum wage has increased too much and too fast in Greece — over and above the cumulative effects of inflation since 2020.

This rise will add up to (rather than help reduce) presently high inflationary pressures, it will reduce Greece’s competitiveness, add to our large current account deficit and create spill-over effects for employers to the rest of the salary ladder. I am the first to champion the cause of higher wages, especially for junior employees and entry level positions, which still remain depressingly low in many private and public sector jobs in Greece. HOWEVER, artificially inflating the minimum wage — rather than organically allowing the economy to recover and supporting wage growth by reducing high taxes, social security contributions and benefits — is a guaranteed recipe for disaster, even if it plays well with voters in the short-term.

According to data from Eurostat, the minimum wage has increased 42% in the decade between 2015 to 2025 (even without factoring in the latest increase since April 1st).

This places Greece 12th out of 22 EU countries with a national minimum wage.

In this case, Greece falls in the last bucket of countries (minimum wage below €1,000).

In terms of Purchasing Power Standard (PPS), Greece ranks 14th out of 22.

This lifts up Greece to the middle category of countries (minimum wage between 1,000 and 1,500 in PPS).

According to the latest available data from the OECD, the real minimum wage in Greece in 2023 was the highest since 2011 — that’s a 13-year record.

This number should be expected to grow even higher in 2024 and 2025, given the consecutive increases in the minimum wage instituted by the Greek government.

Another important dimension to look at is the minimum wage relative to the average wage in a country. According to the International Labour Organization (ILO):

One useful and widely used statistical indicator is the ratio of the minimum wage to the mean or the median wage. As mean wages are affected by extreme values, median wages provide a better point of reference, especially in countries that have high wage inequality. This indicator shows the level of the minimum wage relative to that of the "average worker", and – to the extent that average wages reflect at least in part average productivity levels – also provides information on economic factors. (ILO 2015)

In Greece, the minimum wage is around 50% of the average wage.

Average full time salary per employee

The average full time adjusted salary per employee reached its highest level in 2023 since 2015 at €17k. Sadly, it still remains significantly below the EU average at €38k, a divergence that has been growing since the crisis started in 2009.

For context, Greece ranks 3rd from last in terms of its average annual full time adjusted salary per employee.

Average monthly salary (private sector)

In 2024, the average gross monthly salary in the private sector hit €1,342 per month. That’s a new record and marks a +32% increase since the 2015 lows.

What really matters is not just the average number but how the distribution of salary bands has changed over the past years.

In 2019, more Greeks were earning less than one thousand euros (< €1,000) in the private sector than more (> €1,000). In 2024, the situation has completely flipped.

Greeks are increasingly earning higher salaries in the private sector, with the largest category now making between $1,000 and $1,500 per month.

This is undoubtedly a very positive development.

Average monthly salary (public sector)

Following the increase of the minimum wage in April 1st 2025, the salaries will also increase across all salary levels and years of experience in the public sector.

Here is how public sector salaries are changing.

The 2025 salary increases range from 2.2% for higher salary bands to 3.53% for lower ones across the public sector. There have also been separate special increases for the armed forces, which range from 13% to 20%. You can find the majority of the changes in public sector salaries in these detailed tables.

Difference between private and public sector

Historically, there has been a large wage gap in favor of the public sector in Greece. Starting in 1985, and until around the crisis, it even touched +20-25%.

Since the 2015-2020s, this has changed drastically in favor of the private sector. In 2023, the average hourly and monthly wages of private sector workers were about +14.5% and +18.6% higher than in the public sector, respectively.

This change is particularly interesting because the allure of a steady (permanent) job in the public sector was a common goal for previous Greek generations (celebrated in the past, seen with more distrust today). This is also the way clientelism thrived in the country, and our public sector became notoriously large: local political parties built strong patronage based relationships with voters who were rewarded for their loyalty with positions in the public sector.

Public sector employees are still entitled to a series of extra benefits that are not counted in these analyses (in fact, some of these have been increased since April 1st) and also still enjoy the luxury of a permanent position (with minor exceptions).

Wage index

The Index of Wages Cost records the evolution of hourly labour costs (wages and salaries) by section of economic activity. It shows the short-term development of the total cost, on an hourly basis, for employers of employing the labour force.

In Q4 2024, Greece had the highest (best) Wages Cost Index rating in more than 16 years — that’s going back to even before the beginning of the financial crisis.

This was true when adjusting for seasonality.

And it was also true when adjusting for working days.

In Q4 2024, Greece’s nominal hourly wage costs for the whole economy were increasing faster than both the EU and Euro Area averages.

In simple terms, this means that employers are now increasingly paying higher wages and salaries to retain and attract their employees.

Household perceptions of income

One very important dimension when talking about salaries is the perception of wage earners. The ‘household pulse’ is critical in understanding how market participants feel about labour conditions and whether sentiment is improving or deteriorating.

To get the pulse of Greek households, we will take a look at the latest survey from the Small Enterprises Institute of the Hellenic Confederation of Professionals, Craftsmen, and Merchants (GSEVEE).

In 2024, 21% of households mentioned that their total annual income increased — that’s the highest number in 12 years. At the same time, only 26.2% of households reported a decrease in their total annual income — the second lowest number in the same time frame.

The vast majority of households that saw their income increase in 2024 earned more due to salary increases (vs pensions or corporate profits).
